How to Calculate Chargeable Weight in Air Freight
What is Chargeable Weight?
In air freight, you are charged based on whichever is higher: the actual gross weight of your shipment or the volumetric (dimensional) weight. This higher value is called the chargeable weight.
How to Calculate Volumetric Weight
The standard formula used by IATA is: Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ 6,000 = Volumetric Weight (kg)
Example: A box measuring 60cm × 50cm × 40cm has a volumetric weight of 60×50×40÷6000 = 20kg. If the actual weight is only 8kg, you will be charged for 20kg.
Tips to Optimize Your Chargeable Weight
Use the smallest possible packaging that still protects your goods. Remove unnecessary packaging materials. For dense, heavy items, actual weight usually applies. For light, bulky items, consider repackaging to reduce dimensions.
